How to Keep Your Sewing Machine in Top Condition

Sewing is a very popular hobby that's taking Australia by storm. However, sewing machines are very complicated pieces of equipment. If your sewing machine is not set up in the correct manner or if it is not properly maintained, you may begin to experience problems. There are a number of actions you can take to keep your sewing machine in top condition.
Change the needle on a regular basis
Many novice sewing enthusiasts make the mistake of using the same needle for an extended period of time. The needle of a sewing machine performs the majority of the work as it punctures the fabric and guides the thread into position multiple times a second. Due to this workload, the needle can soon become worn. A needle that has lost its edge may begin to fail, resulting in a broken thread or skipped stitches. It is generally best to insert a new needle into your machine every time you start a new sewing project.
Carry out basic maintenance
To keep your sewing machine in good working order, it is important that you carry out some basic maintenance on a regular basis. This maintenance should take the form of wiping down the machine to remove any dust and debris. Once you have completed this general wipe down, you should remove any loose threads of material or lint which have built up during the operation of the machine. Remove the tension from the springs by raising the press and run a soft cloth between the discs. You should then remove the plate, the bobbin and the case and sweep this area with a soft brush. You may also wish to use a can of compressed air in order to remove dust and debris which is trapped deep in the workings of the machine.
Carry out overlocker maintenance
You should also carry out regular overlocker maintenance. After you have used the machine, you should add a few drops of oil to any moving parts. The oil will help to lubricate these parts and will prevent them from seizing up or overheating. You should also check to make sure that the knife blades are properly secured in place and aligned with each other.
If you are having any issues with your sewing machine, you should have it inspected by an appliance service contractor. The contractor will be able to give your machine a full inspection before carrying out any necessary repairs.
